Move to Spain – how to Prepare for a New Life in the Sun

Are you dreaming of leaving Sweden and starting a new chapter in Spain? Whether it’s a permanent move or a long-term residence, there are several things to consider. Here is a practical guide for those of you planning to move to the Costa Blanca or Costa Cálida.

1. Choose the right area

Spain is diverse – and the difference between regions is huge. On the Costa Blanca and Costa Cálida you get:

✅ One of Europe’s best climates
✅ Good housing prices compared to other coastal regions
✅ Swedish-speaking service, schools and communities
✅ Proximity to airports and good infrastructure

Consider whether you prefer a life by the sea, close to city life or in quieter, rural areas.

2. Apply for an NIE number

NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a Spanish ID number required for home purchases, electricity contracts, bank accounts, mobile phone subscriptions and more. We help you apply for a NIE even before you move.

3. Open Spanish bank account

To be able to pay running costs, taxes and have direct debits for electricity and water, you need a Spanish bank account. We will guide you through the process and help you choose a bank that suits your needs.

4. Register with the municipality (empadronamiento)

Once you have moved in, you should register with the municipality, which is necessary for access to healthcare, schools and sometimes tax benefits. We show you how to do this in your new city or village.

5. School, work or retirement?

  • Family with children? We tell you how it works with international schools and municipal alternatives.

  • Continue working? We explain opportunities for remote work or local businesses.

  • Retiring? Spain has generous rules for EU pensioners – but it requires some planning.

6. Health and medical care

As an EU citizen, you are entitled to healthcare in Spain. Make sure you have a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or apply for residency if you are staying permanently.

7. Tax and declaration

If you are moving permanently, you need to be aware of the differences in tax rules. We recommend contacting a Spanish accountant who can help you file correctly and avoid double taxation.
